Total Joint Replacement is surgery that removes part of arthritis or damaged joint and replaces it with a metal, plastic, or ceramic device called a prosthesis. Hip and knee replacements are the most common joint replacements, but other joints such as ankles, wrists, shoulders, and elbows can also be replaced. During surgery, damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the joint and replaced with prosthetic parts made of metal, plastic, or ceramic. The prosthesis mimics the natural shape and movement of the joints.
